"THE 2011 NRR RIDES"

All bikes & riders are welcome.
Updated 08 Nov 2011

This schedule is the result of the Annual NRR Planning Meeting held on Sunday, 20 Feb 2011. 2011 Meeting Report
The dates, although subject to change and additional details, were selected by the group based around various event calendars. The events below have also been added to the 2011 Master Event Calendar. Event Coordinators are asked to please email pre-ride details and corrections to Woody.

Since "One size does not fit all," the plan for 2011 is to offer rides for varied interests on a regular, monthly basis . . . combined with:
(1) the opportunities provided by the many established m/c events in PA and nearby states, and
(2) offers for other planned or impromptu rides from fellow riders, including those offered by the State College Motorcycle Enthusiasts (SCME).

Additional events, including impromptu rides, can be added if / when someone volunteers to act as that Ride Coordinator. So, as always, volunteers are welcome to speak up. The Event Coordinator is responsible to plan the ride route / times / destination and distribute the route info to fellow riders. It is not required that the Ride Coordinator lead the group on the road. All dates and details are subject to change by the respective Event Coordinator; the rides are "weather-permitting."

RIDE FORMAT: Ride within your comfort level; the priorities are safety and fun. For Restaurant Runs, we typically do "one-way group rides" to the destination, then folks are free come back with the group, on their own or via another route. Depending on those that show up and speak up, two Velocity Groups can be set up. Fuel and food costs are on your own. Each trip (weather-permitting) will leave  from the Kissell Motorsport's shop. Please arrive at KMS 15 minutes prior, fueled and ready-to-ride at the designated time. Please check the Yahoo! Group (a free subscription is required to join the email group) for any last-minute trip details.  In all cases, feel free to bring along a fellow riding buddy, a seatmate and / or your camera. This WAIVER FORM will be provided by the ride leader for signature by each pilot and passenger.

New to the group? You are welcome; just show up!  Bikes with solo pilots and two-ups are always welcome. Safety is always a priority for the group.
New to group riding?
No problem; our rides are typically "one-way guided rides," but please check out this flyer (PDF) from the
Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

MONTH

The NRR Restaurant Run motto is:

"90 minutes out, 90 minutes back
with a meal sandwiched in between."

These rides are typically "one-way group rides" to the target restaurant, then after the meal folks are welcome to come back as they wish (route, group, schedule, velocity, etc.). Departs from Kissell Motorsports at 10:00 AM depending on the target location; usually returns about 3-4 PM. We don't usually take RSVPs since we can't predict the weather and don't know how many to reserve for; we usually just take our chances and "show up" at the destination eatery. Overall, these have been very enjoyable rides with an occasional long meal, depending on the service there.

Mr. Rollie Free, 1948"NRR Day Tour" Rides

The "NRR Day Tour" is a full-day trip with a focus on riding & saddle-time to a special event or destination.

Rides depart at 8 or 9 AM (or earlier) from Kissell Motorsports (Kickstands Up at the noted time). Return about 5-6 PM, depending on the route. PS. And we don't ride like the rider in the 1948 photo (Mr. Rollie Free at the Bonneville Salt Flats - who hit 150.3 mph on his Vincent.)

The Historic Horseshoe CurveSunday, 10 Apr 2011 c/o Woody & Ann.
10 AM departure from KMS.
An easy, season-opener ride to the famous Horseshoe Curve preceeded by lunch at Marzoni's Brick Oven & Brewery Co. in Duncansville. Thanks to Matt L's assistance, this route is planned (via Google Maps).  Riders may also join us at Marzoni's for lunch, around 11:30 AM. While we will spend about 30-45 minutes at the Horseshow Curve parking area, the walk up to trackside - with the $6 pp admission fee - is optional.  And as with most Restaurant Runs, we'll officially adjourn at the Horseshoe Curve so the return route is up to each rider.  PHOTOS!
On your own....or let the group know if you'd like company.

Option #2: Sat. 30 Apr 2011 to the Oley PA Antique M/C Show (the day before the Sunday, 1 May "Picnic Run").  Woody plans to ride down, so if you're interested in riding along, please holler.

The Millersburg FerrySunday, 17 Jul 2011, 10 AM
c/o Jay Bartlett

The popular, annual "NRR Ferry Run" including Skeeter's BBQ, Millersburg Ferry and then Hall's Ice Cream.

PDF ROUTE (0.7 MB)

FROM JAY B.: "This triple-threat ride draws a big crowd every year both for the gourmet (or at least gourmand) delights and the unique riding and scenic attractions. Only the Lawn Fire Company Breakfast rivals this event for cholesterol-elevating potential. We'll gather--tanks full, please--at the Kissell Motorsports parking lot beginning at 9:30 AM, hitting the road promptly at 10:00 AM. Please print out a copy of the route sheet if you want one. It's a detailed eight-pager and we want to avoid unnecessary tree killings. I plan to bring three B&W copies for a 2nd group leader and 2 tailgunners, but since it's a long one (lotta back roads) I'd like to ask people to print out their own. Plus they'll have the option to print it in color that way."

"The first 2 hours (we'll take a vote on a short rest stop to break that up) will be a scenic and sometimes challenging back-roads ride to Skeeter's BBQ in Shamokin Dam. After lunch we'll cross the Susquehanna and wind our way down to the historic Millersburg Ferry for the scariest 2-mph ride of your life back across the river to Liverpool. From there we'll work our way west to Millerstown, home of the semi-famous Hall's Ice Cream, a nondescript-looking little family-run operation that rivals the Berkey Creamery for decadent dairy dessert fare. After gorging, folks who want to get home before 5:00 PM will jump on the Rt 322 slab and cruise back to Happy Valley, for a total riding day of about 200 miles. Gluttons for punishment on the twisties can take the back way through Ickesburg to Lewistown and then any of several possible ways home from there."

2nd try was 14 Aug 2011 (rained out)

NEW DATE: SUN. 2 OCT 2011

We'll have lunch at a J-town area restaurant and then ride down the Johnstown Inclined Plane with all the bikes!

ROUTE MAP (PDF 0.9 Mb)

FROM JACK (who lives in Johnstown): "We'll depart Kissell's at the usual 10:00 AM time. From there, we will follow the route map to Cresson and take a "backside" break at the Sheetz Store (SW corner of Route 53 and the Admiral Perry Highway). We'll then continue to "The Haven Bar & Restaurant. (117 Langhorne Ave, Johnstown). The Haven is a local establishment with good food at reasonable prices. I believe that the group will enjoy the stop. Here is a link to the Haven's website, however the website is very primitive and not much info is available.  After lunch we will continue to the TOP of the Inclined Plane. After some time at the observation deck and visitors center, we will take the incline to the bottom - with our bikes aboard.  For those choosing the Slab Ride Home, I can lead them to Route 22. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will have a super ride."
UPDATE 5 Aug 2011: We learned that the plane is carrying NO VEHICLES this weekend due to a special event in Johnstown. So this ride has been postponed one week.
UPDATE 14 Aug 2011: Due to rain, this trip was postponed. The new date is Sunday, 2 Oct 2011.

Somerset County & Fallingwater Tour

16 JUN 2011 UPDATE: "I'm planning our August Group Ride, which will be to the famous Frank Lloyd Wright home, Fallingwater, in Southwestern PA. This should be on the bucket list for anyone who appreciates both motorcycle riding and architecture. Round trip distance is about 270 miles. We'll plan on leaving around 8 AM depending on our time scheduled to tour Fallingwater. This is a reservation-only rain-or-shine event, as we have to purchase tickets in advance.  The cost is $20 per person for the tour. We will also plan lunch at a nearby restaurant. Hope you can make it!"
18 JUL 2011 UPDATE: "I have the following 10 participants signed up for the Fallingwater Rider on Sunday, 28 August: Bill Harvey, Chris & Beth Clark, Kris, Jim, Woody, Bill Maney, Jay Barlett, Jack Portser  & Greg Suter. We have a reservation for the 1-hour tour from 12:30 to 1:30. We'll meet at Kissell for an 8:30 departure. This will give us ample time to enjoy some scenic riding on the way out and stop for fuel/ break/ snack on the way. I'll also plan for a late lunch stop at someplace relatively close to Fallingwater after the tour. The cost of the tour is $20 per person and we can pay when we arrive. I'll provide route information over the next week or two. Looking forward to the ride!"
22 Aug 2011 UPDATE: "For those members who signed up for the Fallingwater Trip this Sunday, Aug 28, here's a link to our route. We will take the scenic route on the way to Fallingwater and "slab" it back, at least where there's slab available!
http://g.co/maps/xtyf   Let's meet at Kissell at 8:30 am, gassed up and ready to go. This will give us ample time for a break or two during the ride down. Our tour begins at 12:30. We'll stop for a late lunch after the tour. If anyone would like to join those already signed up, email me at bharvey60@gmail.com . Look forward to seeing you. I'll post a reminder with restaurant recommendation later this week along with a weather update. Let's hope Hurricane Irene doesn't decide to take the tour that day as well."
28 Aug 2011 BULLETIN: Due to conditions c/o Hurricane Irene, this ride has been POSTPONED to a future date (TBA).   From Bill Harvey

From Bill Maney
:
"Dan and I pre-rode the route and ate lunch at the Union Hotel. The ride will go out Route 45 through Spruce Creek. We will take a break at the Martin's Convenience store on Route 22 outside Alexandria. Then to Williamsburg Mountain Road and Route 866 to Martinsburg. Hall's Mill Bridge just off Route 26 will be our first covered bridge. From there we go to the Union Hotel Kelly's Scenic View Restaurant in Everett PA for lunch. After lunch we will follow the Bedford County website's "Covered Bridge Tour" including Snook's, Dr. Knisely's, Ryot, Colvin & Heirline before returning to Bedford to take I-99 home. Many of these bridges are tricky to approach and require riding the plank rails. Several of the roads are paved but primitive."    LINK TO PDF ROUTE MAP

Northcentral PA Day Tour
From Jim & Kris: We will meet at Kissell Motorsports in State College. The Pre-ride meeting will be at 9:45 AM with stands up at 10:00 AM. Every bike should arrive with a full gas tank. Gas stops will be limited due to location. We’ll take 550 out of State College to the Unionville Pike and then onto various back roads. As we head up to Lock Haven, we'll have a short jaunt onto Rt. 220 near Lock Haven for the sake of time and avoiding "downtown" Lock Haven. From there, we'll head up 664 to 44 and to the Black Forest Inn for lunch. From the restaurant we’ll continue on to 44 North, linking up with 144 South down through Renovo, Snow Shoe, etc. If the ride must be cancelled, it will be posted on the NRR Yahoo! Group Page at 8 AM the day of the event.
UPDATE 12 Sept 2011: Riders, after looking at maps and some trials over the weekend with Kris, the route has been changed to eliminate the frack truck laden 664 for the upcoming NRR ride to the Black Forest Inn. Doing this also eliminates the 4 lane portion on 220 to get around downtown Lock Haven. Please bring cash if you want all of us to sit together at lunch. Not a crisis if you don't but we'll have to sit at tables no greater than four since they do not have the capability of spliting checks greater than 4 ways. A word of note about this route. Only 87 Octane will be available from points "B" thru "E" - a distance of approximately 120 miles. Please plan accordingly. Reportedly there is 93 Octane in Renovo, but I didn't see it on recon runs. There are no public restrooms available until we get to the Black Forest, approximately 2 hours into the trip (allowing for stops). So come with a full tank in the bike and an empty bladder in you!  Looking forward to seeing you at Kissell's **SATURDAY** at 9:45! With the current route, riders should expect to be back in the State College area around 4pm with little difficulty. Any questions, feel free to post here or message me privately.  Updated map link     RIDE ROSTER

USA Flag2011 NRR Pre-Veteran's Day Ride (weather & temps permitting)    Ride Coordinators: Woody & Ann
This 94-mile loop ride (AKA: The "Pie Fixes Everything" Ride) will depart from Kissell's after the 10:45 AM sign-ins. We'll take a Thaw & Stretch Break at Greenwood Furnace State Park, then eventually end up for lunchhour at the Country Village Restaurant in Allensville - where they're also known for (among other options like a Sunday Full-Buffet with a pie assortment) their Chicken and Waffles Special. Then we'll head into Mill Creek, the Huntingdon Sheetz, Waterstreet, Spruce Creek and home via Rt. 45 - arriving back in State College about 2:30 PM.  Bundle up (or plug in the heated gear) and ride along for lunch (the lunch cost is "on your own"). MORE VOLUNTEERS WELCOME: Interested riders are encouraged to speak up to organize and serve as Ride Coordinators for other rides.
So what's involved in volunteering to coordinate an NRR Ride?

  • Plan a favorite destination & the loop routes (departing from Kissell Motorsports).
  • Decide the date & times (please check the main 2011 Master Event Schedule to avoid conflicts with other events).
  • Email the details to Woody to post here, then also post some info & the URL for the event for the NRR Yahoo! Group.
  • Prepare the Safety Talk & Route Sheets * for the trip.
  • Print out one of these NRR Waiver Forms to obtain the signature of every driver and rider just before departure. NOTE "ICE" = In Case of Emergency.
  • Get someone to take some photos for the Photo Gallery.

* Route Sheets... For safety, it's required that each rider be given a Route Sheet with either the text route or a map with the route. Tom D. King has offered to donate the copying of route sheets at his business (King Printing). About 20 copies per ride is usually a safe (optimistic) number.
