Since "One size does not fit all," the
plan for 2010 is to offer rides for varied interests on a
regular, monthly
basis . . .
combined with:
(1) the opportunities provided by the many
established m/c
events in PA and nearby states, and
(2) offers for additional rides / events from fellow riders.
Additional events, including impromptu rides, can be added if / when
someone volunteers to act as that Ride Coordinator. So, as always,
volunteers are welcome to speak up. The Event Coordinator is responsible
to plan the ride route / times / destination and distribute the route
info to fellow riders. It is not required that the Ride Coordinator lead
the group on the road. All dates and details are subject to change by
the respective Event
Coordinator; the rides are "weather-permitting."
RIDE FORMAT:
Ride within your comfort level; the priorities are safety and fun.
For Restaurant Runs,
we typically do "one-way group
rides" to the destination, then folks are free come back with
the group, on their own or
via another route. Depending on those that show up and speak up, two Velocity Groups can be
set up (Cruisers and Sport Riders). Fuel
and food costs are on your own.
Each trip will leave
(weather-permitting)
from
the Kissell Motorsport's
shop. Please arrive at KMS 15 minutes prior, fueled and
ready-to-leave at the designated time. Please check the
Yahoo! Group
(a free subscription is required to join the email group) for any last-minute trip
details. In all cases, feel free to bring
along a fellow riding buddy, a seatmate and / or your camera.
New to the group?
You are welcome; just show up! Bikes with solo pilots and
two-ups are always welcome. Safety is always a priority for the group. New to group riding? No problem; our rides are actually "one-way
guided rides," but please check out
this flyer (PDF) from the
Motorcycle Safety
Foundation. |
2010
MONTH |

"NRR
Restaurant Run" Rides
The NRR Restaurant Run motto
is:
"90 minutes out, 90 minutes
back
with a meal sandwiched in between."
Not real comfortable
with "group rides?" These rides
are typically "one-way group rides" to the target restaurant, then after the meal folks
are welcome to come back as they wish (route, group, schedule, velocity, etc.). Departs from Kissell
Motorsports at 10:00 AM (NOTE NEW TIME FOR 2010) depending on the target location; usually
returns about 3-4 PM. We don't usually take RSVPs since we
can't predict the weather and don't know how many to reserve for; we
usually just take our chances and "show up" at the destination eatery.
Overall, these have been very enjoyable rides with an occasional
long meal, depending on the service there. |

"NRR
Day Tour"
Rides
The "NRR Day Tour"
is a full-day trip with a focus on
riding and saddle-time to a special event or destination.
Rides depart from Kissell Motorsports
(Kickstands Up at
the noted time).
Return about 5-6 PM, depending on the route. An optional, pre-ride
breakfast may also be held locally, depending on the route and departure
time.
PS. And we don't ride like the rider in the photo
(Mr. Rollie Free in 1948 at the Bonneville Salt Flats - who hit 150.3
mph on his Vincent.) |

A few
changes and notes for Sunday's run: the lunch venue has been moved from
the Mountain House to the Milky Way Restaurant, a short distance away in
Fort Loudon, PA. In favor of more interesting roads and direction of
travel, I've eliminated the after lunch stop in Orbisonia. There's various
minor tweaks from the original route. An update is available at
http://tinyurl.com/cowansgap2
Please note with an estimated arrival back in State
College of 1530, this run falls outside the traditional 90 minutes out /
90 minutes back model. Also while the Milky Way provides a fine, albeit
modest menu, the emphasis for this trip is on the roads not the lunch
destination. In my opinion, this route explores some of the best pavement
south central PA has to offer. I hope you can join us.
SCHEDULE: 0930: Gathering at KMS
Parking lot; 1000: Side-stands up and
departure; 1100: Arrive at the 1st rest
and fuel stop at Martin's in Saxton. Approximately 60 miles from KMS; 1200: Arrive at the Milky Way
Restaurant in Fort Loudon; 1300: Depart Restaurant;
1430: Arrive at Sheetz in Huntingdon. Note Sheetz is 90 Minutes/60 miles
from the Milky Way in Fort Loudon; 100 miles from the fuel stop in Saxton;
160 miles from the departure in State College. 1515-1530: Depending on
the route taken from Huntingdon, arrive in State College. Taking route 26
home from Huntingdon. 202 miles round trip.

September 2010
No NRR Day Tours are scheduled for Sept. But remember that
Chris Kepler's 8th Annual "Grand Canyon Ride" is
scheduled for Sunday 26 Sep 2010, 10 AM departure on Sun. 26 Sept 2010 from McDonald's Nittany Mall.
UPDATE FROM CHRIS: "As in years past there have been between 8 and
25 bikes on the ride. It is open to all makes of bikes, male & female
riders, experienced & new riders. I hope to see some of you there as
well as new riders. If you think you will be going please let me know so
I can give Harlins a heads up on how many to expect which would be
around 1pm or so." "If there would be bad weather that day I will
postpone the ride the day before or by 9am Sunday morning the day of and
rechedule it for the following Sunday October 3rd. All times, routes,
etc would stay the same as planned for the ride had it been held on
September 26th." |

10 AM departure from KMS
(West College Ave. site) to
the Road Kill Cafe' in Artemas, Bedford County. It's several miles
off Route 26
& scenic US 40 (east of Cumberland MD). Sunday is not a good day as
the hours and menu are minimal; Saturday is better - hence the date change. This is more a day tour than a dinner ride as it will be over
200 miles. We will arrive at the Roadkill Cafe in Artemas, PA at 1:00 PM.
The route to the Roadkill will include Wiliamsburg Mountain and Henrietta
Mountain. After eating we will visit the Town Hill Scenic Overlook off
Scenic Route 40 in Maryland. We will return via Rainsburg and Bedford. The
ride is weather dependent. In case of inclement weather, the ride will be
rescheduled or altered. Check Nittany Road Riders Yahoo Group for updates.

We will be departing
from the NEW LOCATION of Kissell Motorsports at 10 AM sharp. Assembly will
start at 9:30 AM. We should get to Benezette around noon or so, where we
will be having lunch at
The Benezette
Hotel. After lunch we will check out the new
Elk Visitors
Center. They have a 22 minute film ($3
fee) available, anyone that wants to view this can, we'll wait for the
conclusion of the film before we move on, unless there are no takers.
Note: I'm told the best time to actually view Elk is dawn or dusk, this
will be our 3rd year going, and the closest we've ever gotten to a live
Elk was ordering an Elk Burger for lunch...so watching the film may be a
good idea. Here is the planned route:

Twin Kiss Restaurant for a "Pie Break" on Rt. 150 near
Bald Eagle State Park. 2:00 PM departure from Kissell Motorsports, please

MORE VOLUNTEERS
WELCOME: Interested riders are encouraged to speak up to
organize and serve as Ride Coordinators for other rides.
So what's involved in
volunteering to coordinate an NRR Ride?
- Plan a favorite
destination & the loop routes (departing from Kissell
Motorsports).
- Decide the date
& times (please check the main
2010
Master Event Schedule to avoid
conflicts with other events).
- Email the
details to
Woody to post here, then also post some info
& the URL for
the event for the NRR Yahoo! Group.
- Prepare the
Route Sheets for the trip. *
- Print out one of
the
NRR Waiver Forms to obtain the
signature of every
driver and rider just before departure.
- Get someone to
take some photos for the Photo Gallery.
* With regard to
the Route Sheets... (for safety, it's required that each rider be given a Route Sheet
with either the text route or a map with the route):
Tom D. King offered to donate the copying of route
sheets at his business (King
Printing). About 20 copies per ride is usually a safe
(optimistic) number.
